The National Social Norms Institute began in 2006 at the University of Virginia. The mission of this institute is mainly to reduce heavy episodic alcohol consumption and alcohol-related harm among college students. It also focuses on effective interventions that target tobacco use, DUI prevention, seat-belt use, and tax compliance. These interventions have not only been limited to college students, but have also been extended to high school students and community-wide settings. Other areas teens often struggle with, i.e., sexual assault prevention, improvement of academic performance, and delaying sexual debut, are currently being targeted using the social norm approach to provide the public with interventions.
